To the east Val d’Ayas borders with the Gressoney Valley and to the west with Valtournenche. Here the mountain slopes are gentler and draped in thick coniferous woodlands and meadows. Val d’Ayas terminates with the ridge created by the westernmost part of the Monte Rosa range that also includes the highest peaks: Western Breithorn 4,165m, Central Breithorn 4,156m, Eastern Breithorn 4,141m, Pollux 4,084m and Castor 4,221m.
The Evançon mountain torrent rises from Verra Glacier and continues its course down the full length of the valley. You can also enjoy effortless outings to numerous alpine lakes, such as Lago Blu at the foot of Verra glacier moraine, or to lakes Pinter, Palasina, Bringuez, Litteran and Frudière, encircled by unique alpine scenery.
The summer months are a great time for climbing the impressive 4,000 m peaks (hikes lasting several days in the Monte Rosa range) or the 6-hut Tour. There are many friendly and professionally run huts such as Ferraro, Grand Tournalin, Vieux Crest and Arp which provide hikers with food and accommodation.
Monterosa Ski resort covers an extensive area linking Val d’Ayas to Gressoney Valley and reaches as far as Alagna in Piedmont. It is interesting to note that Val d'Ayas is the "home" of gold mines: this precious metal has been mined from Brusson shafts since ancient times, but we must not forget the pyrites mines in Bechaz.
